Northern Pintail Duck

 

The challenge to paint this Northern Pintail pair is the unique feather pattern of the drake.  It has an almost

lattice texture offsetting black and white.  The bird is very color contrasted.  Pintail Ducks have been greatly

reduced in their numbers from the mid to late 20th century.  Their numbers have been decreased by 80%.

This has largely been due to the loss of wetland habitat.  It is always an excitement to see a Pintail Duck

in the wild and this nesting pair brings the birds into closer proximity for us to enjoy.  The Northern Pintail

is a reminder of the delicacy of our planet and our responsibility to care for it
